We would like to wish SonicWall a Happy 30th Birthday! SonicWall began their journey back in 1991, starting life as a Macintosh product provider before making the important switch to IT security.
Since as far back as 1997, we’ve been distributing their security solutions and delivering value-added services. We provide sales and technical training for our channel partners to encourage a layered security approach and keep up to date with the latest threat landscape.
So to celebrate their big anniversary, here’s a quick summary of SonicWall, a timeline of their journey so far, and a short overview of our partnership and how it benefits customers.
Who are SonicWall?
In case you didn’t know already, SonicWall are a next-generation firewall and cybersecurity provider. They currently have over 1 million active security solutions, trusted by over half a million organisations around the world in 215 countries.
SonicWall have been protecting businesses and enterprises for decades by defending against cyber threats and attacks through their Capture Labs Threat Research Team. Their intelligence gathering, analysis, and vetting, has allowed them to stay ahead of the curve with zero-day (unknown) threats.
In the last decade, they’ve utilised AI to provide cutting-edge defences in the cyber arms race. Their breach detection and prevention solutions have today secured over a million businesses, mobile networks and their emails, applications, and data.
SonicWall timeline
1991
Founded by Sreekanth Ravi and Sudhakar Ravi, both with Bachelor of Science degrees in engineering from the University of Illinois, Sonic Systems (as it was then known) saw year on year growth. This led to the introduction of over 30 unique technologies and shipments of over 1.2 million products.
1997
Initially, the company was structured around 95% Macintosh products, 5% Security Business. But this quickly changed when it released a security product initially called Interpol and later SonicWALL, a dedicated hardware appliance with firewall and VPN software made for the small-business market.
1999
As sales for SonicWall rapidly accelerated, they left the Apple add-on networking business, and focused exclusively on being a network security company. In 1999 they officially changed their name to SonicWall Inc, and in November 1999 went public with the symbol SNWL.
2003
Matthew T. Medeiros (formerly of Philips Components) became CEO in March 2003. SonicWall also acquired a number of companies throughout the years, expanding its product line in the process to make things even better for users.
March 2021
In March 2021, SonicWall SecureFirst partner program received a 5-star rating in the 2021 CRN Partner Program Guide. The SonicWall SecureFirst Partner Program accelerates their partners’ ability to be thought leaders and game changers in the ever-evolving security landscape.
April 2021
SonicWall receive a glowing report from ICSA Labs for their Capture Advanced Threat Protection solution. ICSA conducted a total of 1,471 tests against SonicWall’s Capture ATP and concluded SonicWall’s solutions detected 100% of previously unknown threats with zero false positives.
